FURANCE AND SOOT PUFFBACKS

Most people have never heard of a puffback. A puffback occurs when your furnace or oil burner malfunctions. This happens when oil is ignited and an “explosion” in the fire box occurs. Smoke will rapidly fill the room. If not attended to quickly, smoke and soot can spread throughout the entire home. This can occur suddenly or gradually.

Puffbacks are not always immediately detectable. In the more serious cases, soot will cover a majority of your home, business and contents. The soot may range from light to very heavy. Soot may come across as regular dust, but this “dust” will reappear hours after being cleaned and may have a gray tint. You may notice “soot webs” - these look a lot like cobwebs, but are darker in color and a strong odor of oil may be present. Leaving a puffback unattended to and the longer the soot is left on surfaces or furnishings, the greater the damage, resulting in a more expensive insurance claim and more extensive clean-up procedures. When a puffback occurs, call Mihalko’s General Contracting right away! We will take care of cleaning your home and belongings; including furniture, clothing, draperies, carpets and more.
